Taffy, a three-year-old golden retriever, became Saskatchewan’s first police dog trained to detect hidden electronic devices like phones and USB drives, joining the Saskatoon Police Service’s Internet Child Exploitation unit on March 20, 2026.
Trained through the Jordan Detection K9 program in Indianapolis, she uses her sense of smell to identify chemical compounds in electronics, helping locate concealed devices during search warrants.
She works with handler Detective Bryon Sommacal, aids in victim support as a therapy dog, and has already contributed to multiple investigations.
Funded by the nonprofit Our Rescue, Taffy’s training and operations cost the police nothing.
