Quebec adjusts 2035 EV goal to 90% hybrid/electric, dropping ban on gas cars amid U.S. policy shifts.
Quebec Premier François Legault has dismissed Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s criticism of Quebec’s electric vehicle targets, saying the province has adjusted its 2035 goal from 100% zero-emission vehicles to 90% hybrid or electric sales, effectively removing its ban on new gas-powered cars.
The change follows U.S. policy rollbacks under the Trump administration, including the end of federal EV incentives and California’s exemption from phasing out gas vehicles.
Legault’s office stated Quebec’s revised target reflects its economic, environmental, and energy realities.
Ford argues that such mandates harm Canada’s auto industry and push jobs south, urging all provinces to eliminate EV requirements.
The federal government has also replaced its EV sales mandate with stricter emissions standards.
