Pitt launches rural dental centers in 2026 to boost underserved areas’ access to care.
The University of Pittsburgh is launching regional dental training centers in Crawford and McKean counties, set to open in summer 2026, to address rural Pennsylvania’s dental care shortage.
The program offers degrees and certificates in general practice residency, dental assisting, and hygiene, combining online coursework with local clinic training.
Funded by grants and partnerships, it aims to create a “homegrown” workforce by keeping graduates in the communities where they train, targeting areas where only 17.9% of dentists serve 26% of the state’s population.
Success will be tracked through patient volume, staff retention, and preventative care visits.
