A major retrospective, "Matisse 1941–1954," opens at Paris’s Grand Palais on March 21, 2026, showcasing 320 works from the final years of Henri Matisse’s life.
Despite illness, the Nazi occupation of France, and a near-fatal surgery in 1941, Matisse remained highly productive, creating 75 paintings and over 40 works in 1950 alone.
The exhibition challenges the idea that he abandoned painting for cut-outs, highlighting his continued innovation through large-scale, vibrant cut-outs like "Blue Nudes" and "La Gerbe," as well as works from the Vence Chapel.
Curated by Claudine Grammont, the show recreates the intimate atmosphere of Matisse’s studio and runs through July 26.
