Odisha marked World Forest Day 2026 with celebrations in Bhubaneswar, where Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced a 558 sq km increase in forest and tree cover over two years, bringing total coverage to 58,597 sq km—37.63% of the state’s area.
He credited large-scale plantation drives, including the Prime Minister’s “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign, which planted over 8 crore saplings in a year.
Majhi emphasized balancing industrial growth with environmental protection, called for stronger action against forest fires, and urged improved management of human-wildlife conflicts.
The event highlighted tribal livelihoods, green economy initiatives, and recognized top-performing forest units.
