Despite Maduro's capture and a new interim government, torture and abuse of detainees continue in Venezuela, UN rights chief Volker Türk says.
UN human rights chief Volker Türk reported ongoing torture and mistreatment of detainees in Venezuela, despite the January capture of former President Nicolás Maduro and the formation of an interim government led by Delcy Rodríguez.
Speaking at the U.N. Human Rights Council, Türk cited credible evidence of physical violence, prolonged arbitrary detention, and inhumane conditions in detention centers.
He emphasized that the leadership change has not led to meaningful improvements, with security forces and intelligence agencies still implicated in abuses.
Türk called for immediate investigations, accountability, independent monitoring of facilities, and access to legal and medical care for detainees, warning that systemic violations persist and require urgent international attention.
A pesar de la captura de Maduro y un nuevo gobierno interino, la tortura y el abuso de detenidos continúan en Venezuela, dice el jefe de derechos de la ONU Volker Türk.
