Delhi High Court orders quick review of shortened notice period for new party registration ahead of West Bengal polls.
The Delhi High Court has directed India's Election Commission to urgently review a request to shorten the 30-day public notice period for registering a new political party, in a case involving the Aam Janata Unnayan Party formed by a former Trinamool Congress leader.
The court, presided by Justice Amit Bansal, cited the urgency of upcoming West Bengal elections and referenced a prior precedent where the notice period was reduced to seven days after elections were announced.
The order, issued on March 17, 2026, requires the ECI to consider the party’s March 13 representation without delay and to process its application promptly if no objections are raised, including assigning an election symbol.
The final decision on the notice period remains with the ECI based on election schedules and legal norms.
El Tribunal Superior de Delhi ordena una revisión rápida del período de aviso acortado para el registro de nuevos partidos antes de las elecciones de Bengala Occidental.
