Costa Rica extradited former Supreme Court judge and security minister Celso Gamboa to the United States on March 20, 2026, marking the first time the country has sent one of its nationals abroad for prosecution.
The 49-year-old faces U.S. drug trafficking and conspiracy charges, accused of helping international networks transport cocaine through Costa Rica.
The extradition followed 2025 constitutional reforms allowing nationals to be extradited, a move aimed at combating rising crime and violence, including a homicide rate of 17.2 per 100,000.
Gamboa, who served in multiple top roles including deputy attorney general, denied the allegations, called them politically motivated, and claimed he would name current officials involved.
He was flown to Texas alongside convicted trafficker Edwin Lopez Vega on a DEA aircraft.
