Clearfield Borough Council voted to end its participation in the Clearfield Regional Police Department due to budget disputes, despite opposition from county officials who warned of public safety risks.
The decision follows a shortfall in funding, with the borough initially allocating $1 million but later agreeing to an extra $250,000 to cover costs.
The council’s move, supported by five members, aims to reestablish a local police force by year’s end, with a joint dissolution plan set for March 25.
The borough remains legally bound to the CRPD until December 31 under a court order, and assets will be split 45% to the borough and 55% to Lawrence Township.
Former CRPD officers will receive hiring preference.
