The Birch Aquarium unveiled a new exhibit on the endangered mountain yellow-legged frog, showcasing conservation efforts and a successful 2025 reintroduction.
The Birch Aquarium at UC San Diego has opened "Imagine Wild: Mountain Yellow-legged Frog," an immersive exhibit spotlighting conservation efforts for the endangered species.
The exhibit, replacing a previous display, highlights the frog’s 90% population decline due to introduced trout, disease, pesticides, and habitat loss.
In 2024, the aquarium partnered with the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance and UCLA to raise over 200 frogs, with 220 bred at the aquarium and others at partner sites.
In summer 2025, more than 200 were released into a preserve in the San Bernardino Mountains—the aquarium’s first species reintroduction.
The exhibit features recreated mountain habitats, eggs, tadpoles, and adult frogs, emphasizing long-term ecosystem restoration and scientific collaboration.
It runs until March 2027 and is included with general aquarium admission.
