Viking has floated out the Viking Libra, the world’s first hydrogen-powered cruise ship, marking a major milestone in sustainable shipping.
Set for delivery in November 2026, the 54,300-gross-ton vessel will use a hybrid system of liquefied hydrogen and fuel cells to achieve zero-emission operations, enabling access to environmentally sensitive ports.
Developed by Fincantieri and powered by a six-megawatt fuel cell system from Isotta Fraschini, the ship features containerized hydrogen storage to address bunkering challenges.
It will begin sailing Mediterranean and Northern European routes, with a follow-up hydrogen-powered vessel, Viking Astrea, scheduled for delivery in 2027.
The project represents a significant step toward scaling hydrogen technology in commercial cruise shipping.
