A UK judge ruled Wimbledon Park land isn’t publicly trusted, clearing the way for a £200M expansion with new courts and a stadium.
A High Court judge has ruled that land formerly used as Wimbledon Park Golf Club is not legally bound by a public trust, clearing a major obstacle for the All England Club’s £200 million expansion plan.
The decision, by Mr Justice Thompsell, found the site was never officially dedicated for public recreation and remained private, allowing the club to proceed with plans to triple the venue’s size, add 38 new courts, and build an 8,000-seat stadium.
The Greater London Authority approved the project in 2024, but Save Wimbledon Park plans to appeal, arguing the land should remain a public green space.
The club says the expansion will create 27 acres of new public parkland and enhance Wimbledon’s global standing, with strong local support.
