Tata Steel launches India’s first scrap-based electric arc furnace in Ludhiana, producing low-carbon rebar with 50% renewable energy.
Tata Steel has opened India’s first scrap-based Electric Arc Furnace in Ludhiana, a ₹3,200 crore facility with an annual capacity of 0.75 million tonnes.
The plant uses 100% steel scrap, sources 40% from its Rohtak recycling unit, and runs on nearly 50% renewable energy, aiming to produce steel with under 0.3 tonnes of CO₂ per tonne.
It will manufacture construction-grade rebar under the Tata Tiscon brand.
The inauguration was attended by Punjab’s Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, Tata Steel Chairman N Chandrasekaran, and CEO T V Narendran, who emphasized the project’s role in advancing low-carbon manufacturing and community development through health, education, and environmental initiatives.
