Ashok Kharat, a self-proclaimed spiritual leader from Nashik, was arrested in Maharashtra on charges of rape and sexual assault, allegedly abusing women over three years through drugging and coercion.
Police seized 58 videos from his office, which was disguised as a real estate firm, and raided his properties.
The case intensified after viral images showed Rupali Chakankar, chairperson of the state women’s commission and an NCP leader, performing rituals with Kharat, prompting opposition demands for her resignation.
Chakankar denies knowledge of his alleged crimes, while the state government formed a Special Investigation Team led by IPS officer Tejaswini Satpute to probe the case.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis directed swift action prior to the arrest, and Kharat remains in police custody until March 24.
