A Scottish priest was convicted in March 2026 for sexually assaulting an intoxicated man during a post-dinner outing.
Stephen Baillie, a 61-year-old Catholic priest with 36 years of service, was convicted in March 2026 of sexually assaulting a man in Clarkston, Scotland, during a June 2024 incident following a business dinner and pub visit.
The victim, who was heavily intoxicated and unable to consent, described multiple acts of sexual assault, including unwanted touching, attempted and actual oral sex, and assault during a shower.
The Diocese of Paisley confirmed Baillie has been removed from ministry, stating the case did not trigger safeguarding protocols as the victim was not a child or vulnerable adult, but emphasized the conduct was incompatible with ordained ministry.
Sentencing is scheduled for next month, with Baillie granted bail pending background reports.
The diocese said a canonical process will resume to determine further Church action and reiterated its commitment to safe, supportive environments.
