The Pentagon seeks to extend the National Guard’s D.C. deployment through 2029 amid crime reduction and local opposition.
The Pentagon is seeking to extend the National Guard's deployment in Washington, D.C., through 2029, pending Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s approval.
About 2,500 Guard members, many from outside the city, have been stationed in D.C. since August 2025 under President Trump’s order to support public safety and assist the Metropolitan Police Department.
The deployment, initially set to end in 2025, aims to continue efforts to reduce crime, with D.C. reporting a 27% drop in crime compared to the same period last year, including 11 homicides and 201 assaults with deadly weapons.
Critics, including city leaders and residents, argue the presence undermines local autonomy and fails to target high-crime areas.
The District has sued the federal government over the deployment, and two National Guard members were shot in November 2025, one fatally.
