Panama denies ignoring arbitration over seized Canal ports, citing constitutional concerns and legal delays.
Panama’s president denied claims by CK Hutchison’s Panama Ports Company that the government ignored arbitration over the seizure of two Canal ports, asserting Panama had hired international lawyers and sought a delay due to short notice.
The move followed a January court ruling voiding the port concession, which the government says was unconstitutional.
PPC, which operated the ports since 1997, called the takeover illegal and filed a $2 billion claim, while Panama maintained full control over the canal.
The dispute has drawn attention amid U.S.-China tensions and ongoing legal battles over port operations and foreign influence.
