NY’s insurance reform fight heats up as Uber backs changes to cut costs, but key provisions face removal.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul’s proposed auto insurance reforms, aimed at lowering premiums by limiting payouts to drivers more than 50% at fault and narrowing the definition of “serious injury,” have triggered a major lobbying clash between Uber and trial lawyers.
Uber, which spent $8 million on ads promoting the changes, claims they will reduce costs for drivers, while the Trial Lawyers Association opposes the measures, spending nearly $1.4 million annually to argue they harm victims’ rights.
Though Hochul’s allies support the plan, lawmakers have removed key provisions from their budget drafts, leaving the outcome uncertain ahead of the April 1 deadline.
