NASA is switching Artemis moon missions from Boeing’s SLS to SpaceX’s Starship to speed up landings by 2028.
NASA is shifting key roles in its Artemis moon missions from Boeing’s SLS rocket to SpaceX’s Starship, aiming to accelerate lunar landings by 2028.
Under the revised plan, Starship will launch the Orion capsule into Earth orbit, where it will dock with a pre-refueled Starship HLS variant, then perform the translunar injection burn.
This change, driven by cost and schedule concerns, eliminates the need for SLS’s expensive upper stages and leverages Starship’s reusability.
The Artemis III test mission, now set for mid-2027, will validate this new docking and integration process.
A high-level meeting with SpaceX, Boeing, Blue Origin, and Lockheed Martin is scheduled for March 25 to finalize implementation.
