Massachusetts proposes lifting Sunday hunting ban, expanding crossbow use, and reducing bowhunting setbacks, backed by public support and wildlife board endorsement.
Governor Maura Healey is pushing to lift Massachusetts’ ban on Sunday hunting, allow all hunters to use crossbows, and reduce bowhunting setback distances from 500 to 250 feet, following widespread public input and endorsement by the state’s Fisheries and Wildlife Board.
The changes, supported by 70% of over 11,000 respondents, aim to improve wildlife management, reduce deer-related vehicle crashes and tick-borne diseases, and expand outdoor access and food security.
The proposals will be included in a supplemental budget and require legislative approval, facing opposition from some animal welfare groups and residents concerned about public safety and quiet recreation.
Starting April 1, 2026, alpha-gal syndrome will also become a reportable disease to track tick-related health risks.
