A 23-year-old man, Jesus Javier Gomez Islas, filed a $100 million claim against the LAPD, alleging he lost sight in his right eye after being struck by a less-lethal projectile during an anti-ICE protest on January 31 near the Metropolitan Detention Center.
Video shows him on a scooter, unharmed and not confronting officers, when a green-painted projectile hit him, causing immediate injury.
Doctors confirmed he will not regain vision in the affected eye and warned of potential harm to his left eye.
His attorney said no officers provided medical aid.
The LAPD declined to comment due to pending litigation.
The incident occurred two weeks after a federal judge limited the department’s use of less-lethal weapons.
