India's Supreme Court told a young couple fleeing honor violence to seek help from Delhi's High Court first.
The Supreme Court of India declined to directly intervene in a plea filed by a 19-year-old Bihar woman and 22-year-old Uttar Pradesh man who fled to Delhi to marry, citing threats of honor-based violence from their families.
Found in the court’s parking lot by their lawyer, Harvinder Chaudhary, the couple said social media influenced their decision.
The court, led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, directed them to first seek relief from the Delhi High Court under Article 226, emphasizing procedural hierarchy.
Chaudhary reported that police at Tilak Marg station attempted to detain the couple instead of protecting them.
The court noted the High Court’s jurisdiction and signaled it would communicate with the High Court’s Registrar to ensure proper review.
