India to host 2028 World Indoor Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar, its first time hosting the event.
India has been awarded the 2028 World Indoor Athletics Championships, to be held in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, marking the country’s first time hosting the event and making it the fourth Asian nation—after Japan, Qatar, and China—to do so.
The decision was confirmed by the World Athletics Council on March 19, 2026, during its meeting in Torun, Poland.
The Kalinga Indoor Athletics Stadium, a newly built, World Athletics-certified facility, was approved after a site visit in January.
The 22nd edition will feature elite athletes from around the world, though no Indian athletes are expected to compete in the 2026 event.
The United States remains the most successful nation in the championships’ history.
