India confirms Ukraine's request for consular access to seven detainees linked to alleged arms trafficking in Mizoram.
India has confirmed receiving a request from Ukraine for consular access to six Ukrainian nationals and one U.S. citizen arrested by the NIA on suspicion of illegally entering Mizoram, traveling to Myanmar, and allegedly supplying weapons, training, and drone technology to banned insurgent groups.
The suspects, detained in Delhi, Lucknow, and Kolkata, were remanded to 11-day custody under India’s Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
The NIA alleges they entered India on tourist visas, bypassed restrictions, and engaged in cross-border militant activities.
Ukraine expressed concern, suggesting possible Russian involvement in triggering the probe and calling the case potentially politically motivated, while reaffirming its opposition to terrorism and offering cooperation under a bilateral legal assistance treaty.
India stated the case is being handled legally, with no political implications, and consular access will be granted per legal requirements.
