The IEA urges global demand cuts to counter oil crisis from Middle East conflict, urging remote work, lower speeds, and transit use.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) has urged governments, businesses, and households to reduce energy demand amid a global oil supply crisis triggered by escalating conflict in the Middle East, particularly disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
In response to crude prices exceeding $100 per barrel, the IEA recommended actions such as working from home, lowering highway speed limits by at least 10 km/h, reducing air travel, and promoting public transit and carpooling to cut fuel use.
These measures aim to ease inflationary pressures and stabilize markets, complementing a record 400 million barrel release from global strategic oil reserves, primarily supplied by the U.S.
The agency emphasized that coordinated demand-side actions, alongside international energy diplomacy, are critical to shielding consumers and maintaining energy security.
