The Hong Kong Philharmonic released a live album of Wagner’s Ring cycle, marking a major international milestone.
The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra has released its debut album on Deutsche Grammophon, featuring a symphonic arrangement of Richard Wagner’s Ring cycle by Dutch composer Henk de Vlieger, conducted by incoming music director Tarmo Peltokoski.
Recorded live in June 2025 at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall, the album marks a milestone in the orchestra’s international presence and reflects its decade-long dedication to Wagner’s work, which earned it the 2019 Gramophone Magazine Orchestra of the Year Award—the first Asian ensemble to win the honor.
The recording, described as a powerful, condensed journey from the Rhine to Valhalla, showcases the orchestra’s precision and intensity in performing De Vlieger’s rarely performed arrangement.
Released to coincide with the 150th anniversary of Wagner’s tetralogy, the album is also available in high-resolution immersive audio on Deutsche Grammophon’s STAGE+ streaming platform and precedes a European tour in November and December.
