Harris County approved a $410M hospital expansion in Hermann Park, using eminent domain, sparking opposition over green space loss.
The Harris County Commissioners Court has unanimously approved the $410 million expansion of Ben Taub Hospital, using 8.9 acres of Hermann Park, including the Warnecke Tract, to add 100 patient beds and ease chronic overcrowding.
The project, aimed at serving over 3,000 additional patients annually, faces opposition from park advocates and some Warnecke family heirs who argue the land’s green space purpose was compromised.
Under Texas law, the county must follow eminent domain procedures, including notifying landowners and potentially paying over $100 million in compensation.
The process could take six to nine months before construction begins.
