Freeport-McMoRan and Codelco began environmental permitting for a $7.5B El Abra mine expansion in Chile to boost copper output to 300,000 tons annually.
Freeport-McMoRan has started the environmental permitting process for a $7.5 billion expansion of its El Abra copper mine in Chile, a joint project with state-owned Codelco.
The expansion, announced in mid-2024 after years of delay, aims to increase annual copper production to about 300,000 metric tons, a significant rise from 2025’s 91,400 tons.
It includes a new concentrator, desalination plant, and infrastructure upgrades, with operations expected to begin in the coming decade.
Chile’s Mining Minister Daniel Mas confirmed the permit process will take about three years and emphasized strict environmental compliance.
Final construction decisions will follow permitting.
The project, if approved, would make El Abra one of Chile’s largest copper operations and reflect broader industry efforts to meet rising global demand driven by energy transition trends.
