Cuban mechanic builds charcoal-powered car to cope with fuel crisis.
Cuban mechanic Juan Carlos Pino has converted a 1980 Fiat Polski to run on charcoal amid a severe fuel shortage following the U.S. cutoff of oil shipments in January.
Using scrap materials like a repurposed propane tank and milk jug filter, Pino built a system that burns charcoal to generate power, enabling the car to reach 70 km/h and travel 85 kilometers.
The innovation, inspired by local ingenuity and open-source designs, has drawn attention in Aguacate near Havana and reflects broader efforts across Cuba to adapt vehicles and generators to alternative fuels due to soaring fuel prices and limited supply.
