Captain Philip Gilbert Muldowney, a 25-year-old British Army officer from County Roscommon, died on January 25 during a live firing training exercise at Otterburn Training Area in Northumberland.
The inquest into his death, opened at Northumberland Coroner’s Court, confirmed he sustained a gunshot wound entering through his back and exiting his left shoulder.
Despite immediate medical response, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident is under investigation by Northumbria Police, the Health and Safety Executive, and the Defence Safety Authority, with the inquest adjourned to May 19, 2027, pending further review.
