Baton Rouge mayor proposes 40% pay raise for police to address staffing shortage.
East Baton Rouge Parish Mayor-President Sid Edwards has proposed a historic pay raise for Baton Rouge Police Department officers, increasing base pay from $41,000 to $58,000 annually—a 40% jump—along with a minimum 15% raise for sworn staff, at least 3.5% for non-sworn employees, and a 5.9% increase for Police Chief TJ Morse.
The raises, funded by savings from health insurance reforms and internal department changes, aim to address a critical shortage of over 150 officers and improve recruitment and retention.
The changes, set to take effect in mid-May and appear on June paychecks, are part of a broader initiative to boost pay across city-parish agencies, including EMS and the Constable’s Office.
The proposal now awaits Metro Council approval.
