Wisconsin expands postpartum Medicaid to 12 months for low-income mothers, effective July 2026.
Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers signed legislation extending postpartum Medicaid coverage from 60 days to 12 months for low-income mothers and infants, making the state the 49th to adopt such an expansion.
The change, effective July 1, 2026, pending federal approval, aims to improve maternal and infant health by ensuring continued access to care during the critical postpartum period, when nearly half of pregnancy-related deaths occur and 95% are preventable.
The law, part of Evers’ long-standing “Healthy Moms, Healthy Babies” initiative, passed with bipartisan support and is expected to reduce disparities, especially among Black mothers, and strengthen family economic stability.
