Uber to invest $1.25B in Rivian for 50,000 self-driving robotaxis, starting in 2028.
Uber will put up to $1.25 billion into Rivian to make and use up to 50,000 self-driving robotaxis. This will start with 10,000 Rivian R2 vehicles that can drive themselves and options for 40,000 more by 2030. Operations will start in San Francisco and Miami in 2028 and will grow to 25 cities in the U.S., Canada, and Europe by 2031. The investment includes an initial $300 million commitment that is subject to regulatory approval and is dependent on meeting milestones for self-driving cars. Rivian, which makes the R1T and R1S cars and Amazon delivery vans, started making the R2 in 2026 and is building a $5 billion factory in Georgia. Rivian's stock went up 10% because of the deal, and Uber's shares went up a little.
