Shawn Wilmoth sentenced to 4+ years for fraud using fake signatures to disqualify GOP gubernatorial candidates in 2022.
Shawn Wilmoth, central to Michigan’s 2022 election petition scandal, was sentenced to at least four years in prison for fraud involving thousands of fake signatures that disqualified five Republican gubernatorial candidates.
He and co-defendant Willie Reed were convicted after a scheme that saw nine campaigns, including judicial races, pay over $700,000 to firms linked to them.
State officials found the petitions contained invalid or duplicated signatures, a case described as unprecedented.
Wilmoth was allowed to remain free on bond pending appeal.
No candidates were accused of knowing about the fraud.
Perry Johnson, one of the affected candidates, is running again in 2026 and plans to use text confirmations to verify petition signers.
