Pakistan launches new social media authority with broad powers to block content and fine platforms.
Pakistan has launched the Social Media Protection and Regulatory Authority (SMPRA) under the 2025 amended Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act, appointing lawyer Ayyaz Shaukat as its first chairman for a five-year term.
The authority, which includes five named members and two reserved seats, can block content deemed harmful or misleading within 24 hours of a complaint, regulate social media platforms, issue licenses, and impose fines.
It aims to combat online disinformation and enhance digital safety, though critics warn the powers may threaten free speech and digital rights.
