NHTSA expands probe into Tesla’s FSD, citing 9 crashes, including one fatal, over failure to detect hazards in poor visibility.
The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has expanded its investigation into Tesla’s Full Self-Driving system, now covering about 3.2 million vehicles, after nine crashes—including one fatal—were linked to the technology’s failure to detect poor visibility or respond in time.
The probe, now in an engineering analysis phase, examines whether the system poses a safety defect, potentially leading to recalls or enforcement actions.
The investigation follows a Texas woman’s lawsuit claiming her Cybertruck veered off a freeway due to FSD, causing serious injuries, and alleging misleading marketing, flawed alerts, and software issues.
Tesla has not commented.
