Marshall University reverses decision to cut women’s swimming, citing Title IX compliance.
Marshall University has reversed its decision to eliminate its women’s swimming and diving program, announcing the team’s reinstatement after a special Board of Governors meeting on March 18, 2026.
The reversal followed a student-led lawsuit alleging Title IX violations and an independent audit showing the university struggled to meet gender equity requirements in athletics.
University leaders said eliminating the women’s sport could have placed Marshall outside Title IX’s legal safe harbor, despite long-term plans to expand female athletic opportunities.
The decision also allows the university to continue developing its new varsity stunt program.
The swim team, informed of the planned cut just before its conference championship, will now remain.
