A fire at a Waterville home on March 17, 2026, was caused by oil-based staining rags improperly disposed of in a trash bag, investigators with the Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office concluded.
The blaze, which began on the enclosed porch, caused heavy damage to the structure and minor smoke damage inside.
No injuries were reported.
Officials warn that such rags can spontaneously combust when confined and urge residents to safely dispose of them by soaking in water, spreading out to dry, or placing in sealed metal containers with water.
They also caution against pouring paint or solvents down drains.
