Luigi Mangione’s lawyers seek trial delays, citing constitutional rights and a biased media environment.
Luigi Mangione’s defense team has asked a judge to delay his federal trial until January 2027 and his state murder trial until September, arguing that preparing for both cases simultaneously would violate his constitutional rights to effective legal counsel and self-representation.
Mangione, 27, faces life in prison if convicted in either case and has pleaded not guilty to the December 4, 2024, killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Manhattan.
Surveillance footage showed a masked gunman shooting Thompson from behind, with ammunition marked “delay,” “deny,” and “depose.” Mangione was arrested in Pennsylvania after being seen at a McDonald’s.
His lawyers claim the current trial schedule, combined with high-profile media coverage and a publicized arrest, creates an unfair trial environment.
Federal prosecutors oppose the delay, and both the U.S. attorney’s office and the Manhattan district attorney’s office declined to comment.
Los abogados de Luigi Mangione buscan retrasos en el juicio para garantizar su derecho a una defensa efectiva en medio de acusaciones de alto perfil por matar al CEO de UnitedHealthcare.
