Ireland seeks to join Antarctic Treaty System, enabling scientific research and conservation efforts.
Fianna Fáil TD Malcolm Byrne has introduced a bill to bring Ireland into the Antarctic Treaty System, making it the 59th country to join.
The 1959 treaty designates Antarctica as a scientific preserve for peaceful purposes, banning military activity and resource exploitation.
Byrne cited Ireland’s historical ties to Antarctic exploration through figures like Edward Bransfield and Francis Crozier, and emphasized that joining would allow Irish scientists to participate in international research on climate, astronomy, and marine biology.
He noted Ireland is the most populous EU member not currently part of the treaty, and the move would affirm its commitment to protecting the continent from fossil fuel development and promoting global scientific cooperation.
