Construction began on a $140M road upgrade in South Auckland to ease traffic and support future growth and transit.
Construction has started on the Waihoehoe Road Upgrade in South Auckland, a $136–148 million project to widen a 400-meter stretch between Great South Road and Kath Henry Lane from two to four lanes, with up to six lanes on a new bridge over the North Island Main Trunk Line.
The work, part of a 4.5-kilometer east-west corridor from Drury Hills Road to Jesmond Road, aims to improve safety, traffic flow, and access for residents and future public transport, including the new Drury train station.
The project supports South Auckland’s expected growth of over 120,000 new residents in the next 30 years and complements other major infrastructure efforts like SH1 and SH22 upgrades.
Expected completion is mid-2028.
