Colombia arrested Angel Aguilar, suspected mastermind of Ecuador’s 2023 presidential candidate assassination, linked to Los Lobos gang.
Colombia has arrested Angel Aguilar, an Ecuadoran national linked to the 2023 assassination of Ecuadorian presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio, who was killed by gunmen outside a campaign rally in Quito.
Aguilar, suspected of being the mastermind behind the attack and a high-ranking member of Ecuador’s Los Lobos drug gang, was detained at Bogotá’s airport after arriving from Mexico.
Authorities allege he used his 2022 parole from a prior murder conviction to continue criminal activities.
The arrest follows trilateral cooperation between Colombia, Ecuador, and Mexico, amid ongoing diplomatic tensions over border security and cross-border crime.
In 2024, Ecuador sentenced five suspects to up to 34 years in prison, with a dozen others still on trial.
