Starting July 2026, California’s AB 602 law allows college students who overdose to access rehabilitation before facing university disciplinary action.
The law, backed by student advocates from UC Berkeley, UC Davis, and others, aims to reduce fear of punishment that may prevent help-seeking.
It enables voluntary recovery support and staff outreach after an overdose.
Drug overdoses are now the third-leading cause of death among 18- to 24-year-olds in California, with alcohol, hallucinogens, and cocaine commonly involved.
While about 2.3% of students report being in recovery, many avoid seeking help due to distrust in campus systems.
UC Berkeley confirmed it will comply but did not detail policy changes.
The goal is to prioritize health and recovery over punishment.
