A California ferret advocate sues wildlife agencies to lift the state’s 93-year-old ferret ban, citing delayed review of a 2025 petition.
Pat Wright, a California resident and ferret advocate, has filed a writ of mandate in Sacramento County Superior Court against state wildlife agencies, demanding they act on Petition 2025-003 to lift California’s ban on domestic ferrets.
The ban, in place since 1933 and reaffirmed in 1988, classifies ferrets as non-domesticated, despite their legality in 48 other states.
The Fish and Game Commission accepted the petition in June 2025 and referred it to the Department of Fish and Wildlife, but no formal response has been issued.
Wright, who founded LegalizeFerrets.org, says the agencies have not provided records and cites slower processing of similar petitions, seeking a court order to compel timely review.
