Bell has completed the first phase of the U.S. Marine Corps’ SPINE program, upgrading two H-1 helicopters—AH-1Z and UH-1Y—with enhanced structural integrity and electrical systems.
The modifications, done at Bell’s Amarillo Assembly Center over 19 months, are now undergoing flight testing at Naval Air Station Patuxent River to finalize the configuration for future fleet-wide upgrades.
The improvements aim to boost survivability, lethality, and integration of next-generation weapons and digital systems.
Bell says the upgrades ensure the H-1 fleet remains safe, capable, and interoperable for modern combat, with ongoing work planned over the next decade.
