A 49-year-old Aboriginal man, Robert Beck, appeared in Horsham Magistrates Court charged with murder after an 80-year-old man was found dead with 24 injuries near the Henty Highway, 300km northwest of Melbourne.
Beck was arrested the same night following reports of an armed individual acting erratically 17km away.
The prosecution called the case complex due to multiple crime scenes, seized items, and phone evidence, requesting 12 weeks to prepare the brief, but the court granted eight weeks.
Beck’s lawyer cited his mental health conditions, including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, and requested a nurse assessment.
Beck remained silent, did not apply for bail, and is to return to court in July for a committal mention.
Support services are available through Lifeline, beyondblue, and 13YARN.
