West Wits Mining launched South Africa’s first new underground gold mine in 15 years, producing gold on March 17, 2026.
West Wits Mining has produced its first gold from the Qala Shallows underground mine in South Africa’s Gauteng province, marking the country’s first new operational underground gold mine in over 15 years.
The milestone, achieved on March 17, 2026, involved processing ore at Sibanye-Stillwater’s Ezulwini plant under a toll-treatment agreement, allowing West Wits to bypass major infrastructure costs.
The mine is the first phase of the Witwatersrand Basin Project, which holds a JORC-compliant resource of 7.24 million ounces at 4.0 grams per tonne.
Located in the historically rich Central Rand goldfield, the project aims to reach steady-state production of 200,000 ounces annually within 18 months, with a potential 20- to 25-year mine life.
