Vatican appeals court declares mistrial in Becciu case due to legal flaws and withheld evidence.
The Vatican’s appeals tribunal declared a mistrial in the high-profile case against former Cardinal Angelo Becciu, ruling that procedural errors by both Pope Francis and Vatican prosecutors invalidated the original indictment.
The 16-page decision found that a 2020 papal decree granting prosecutors broad powers was legally ineffective because it was never published, and that key evidence, including witness records and redacted documents, was withheld from the defense.
The case, centered on a 350 million euro London property investment, had led to Becciu’s 2023 conviction on embezzlement and other charges.
The appeals court ordered all original documents handed over by April 30 and set a new trial date for June 22.
The ruling marks the first time a Vatican court has declared a papal decree void, challenging the legal foundation of the prosecution and casting doubt on the fairness of the original trial.
