U.S.-Indonesia trade deal boosts American access to critical minerals and energy, cuts tariffs, and promotes shared standards.
A new U.S.-Indonesia trade agreement, announced in March 2026, secures American access to Indonesia’s critical minerals like nickel and fossil fuels, with Indonesia expanding U.S. investment in mining and refining, easing export rules, and committing to $15 billion in U.S. energy purchases.
In return, the U.S. reduced a threatened 32% tariff to 19% and granted zero tariffs on key exports including palm oil, coffee, cocoa, spices, and rubber.
The deal includes cooperation on small modular nuclear reactors and a U.S. coal export corridor, while new rules require foreign firms to follow the same tax, environmental, and labor standards as domestic companies.
The pact reflects U.S. efforts to reduce reliance on China in supply chains and boost energy exports, as Indonesia seeks to balance relations with both powers.
