Thirty-six families at Hazelwood Estate avoided eviction after protests and government intervention, but long-term security remains uncertain under new rental laws.
Thirty-six households at Hazelwood Housing Estate in County Wexford received eviction notices just before new rental laws took effect on March 1, 2026.
The landlord, Patchflow Ltd, withdrew the notices after tenant resistance and a meeting with Minister for Housing James Browne, who confirmed tenants could stay temporarily without rent increases and that government support like HAP and the First Home Loan Scheme would be explored.
About 100 people, including children, were affected, with some facing eviction by May or August.
The Community Action Tenants Union (CATU) said the victory is temporary, warning against individual negotiations that could divide residents and stressing the need for collective action to ensure long-term housing security under new laws that cap rent increases at 2% or inflation, require six-year tenancies, and restrict rent resets after no-fault evictions.
